The colour of your skin is produced by the pigment cells, called melanocytes, which produce a black or brown substance. In humans, these cells are distributed throughout all your body, and they are located just under the outer layer of the skin. That is why we have an even colour throughout our body. In zebrafish, however, these melanocytes are programmed to form 5 horizontal stripes from the head to the tail. Therefore, while in zebrafish the melanocytes are programmed to form stripes, in humans, they are programmed to distribute evenly through all the body. That is why we don’t have stripes, and why we cannot induce the formation of stripes in humans.
