Shooting stars are not actually stars! They are meteors – objects from space such as rocks or bits of ice – that entered the Earth’s atmosphere. As the atmosphere contains particles, these cause friction in the quickly-moving meteor, which causes it to start burning up, leaving behind a long bright tail.
