The first telescopes were built in western Europe in the early 17th century, largely thanks to the improvements in manufacturing glass. The first design was probably made by Hans Lippershey. The key to the early telescope is that is had a convex lens () shape. This allowed light to be focused to the eyepiece. The mathematician and scientist Johannes Kepler who contributed to the understanding of the way planets move was one of the first people to use and develop the telescope and later contributors included Sir Isaac Newton.
