Butter is made from milk. First, the cream (which contains a lot of fat) is separated from milk. This cream is then shaken or beaten until it starts to thicken. At this point, any liquid still present is removed (this is called buttermilk).

At this point you have your butter – it is then weighed, shaped, cut, packaged and delivered to your supermarket.

You can make you own, too! Just get some double cream and start whipping it with a whisk. It will end up with the consistency of whipped cream, however don’t stop there! If you keep whisking it, it will thicken even further, eventually reaching a buttery consistency!
