The glow of glowworms and other glowing animals is called “bioluminescence”. It is caused by a chemical reaction inside the glowworm that produces light energy. These reactions usually involve special pigments called luciferins that react with oxygen and energy (ATP) to produce light and carbon dioxide. This causes the fabulous glow that we can see!

Scientists think that the glow is used in two ways. Either to warn predators away by flashing at them, or to attract a partner in order to mate and make babies!
