Question: How did all the oil form underneath the ground

The oil we take from the ground and refine into fuel is called petroleum. It is called a ‘fossil fuel’ because it is actually formed from layers and layers of dead organisms such as plants and animals.

Over a very long time, heat and pressure builds up and slowly turns the decayed organisms into an oily substance, which makes a very effective fuel!

However, it can take millions of years to make this oil, and we’re using up the Earth’s supply of it very quickly, which is why we should try to use more renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power!
