I wanted to be lots of different things when I was growing up, but I think once I knew about science jobs I wanted one. What kind of science job I wanted kept changing though!

I never really thought to myself “I really want to be a scientist”. During my degree I did think, “I wonder how that works?” and continued to be inquisitive about science. I ended up doing a PhD because I wanted to learn more, not because I wanted to be a scientist. Then again, what makes a scientist is wanting to know more and more about something you’re interested in.

When I was younger I wanted to be a Vet, but that didn’t really work out for me after I did some work experience in a Vets surgery and was put off.

I can’t say I wanted to be a scientist, I just enjoyed science so it just made sense to end up in a job where I could keep studying it. I have always loved the natural sciences though and I remember that when I was little I wanted to be a zoologist like David Attenborough and travel the world seeing different animals.

I always wanted to be scientist. But after my PhD I thought I’d changed my mind (my PhD was not massive fun). After a couple of years I got bored and realised that there were lots of things I like about doing science. Changing fields was good, it made me realise I could use my brain in different ways.

I haven’t always wanted to be a scientist, when I was younger I really wanted to be in the theater, or a musician.

Even now somedays can be hard work and things don’t go well and I wonder is this really what I want to do. I think you get that in any job though, and scientists don’t get paid amazingly well. I am glad I’m a scientist though, I really enjoy the way I get to use my brain everyday and there are lots and lots of good things about my job
