I love getting to design experiments because I find it very fun. It was getting to do experiments that made me interested in psychology when I was in school and it’s what I wanted to do ever since.

I’ve always been interested in people and how they think and learn, and do the things they do, which kind of naturally led me into studying the human mind and psychology. I wanted to become a psychologist because – like many others – I wanted to help people and especially those who are ‘vulnerable’, like those with mental health conditions or learning disabilities. I got into research whilst studying psychology and then discovered, like Madeleine, that I enjoyed the process of asking questions and coming up with ways to answer them using experiments and other methods. What I’d like to do next – hopefully – is combine these two paths and use my research skills in government or charity sectors, so that I can use my research knowledge and skills to directly have impact and support people – like gathering evidence for particular political decisions or finding out how best to support different individuals. I never really had a ‘career path’ so to speak. I just did things that I enjoyed and now I’ve ended up here!

I feel really passionate about supporting children and young people because they are the future! I think its really important to empower them to develop into confident people who can handle the pressures of society today.

Working towards this goal keeps me feeling positive!

I was originally passionate about becoming a psychologist because I found human behaviour so odd/funny/interesting/strange! And I wanted to learn more! Now, I’m passionate about using my skills to help people… and my role allows me to do that.

For me, the best part is when I get to interview staff and patients in hospital. They work so hard, yet they have so much energy and passion for helping people!

I enjoy developing and conduct research in the field of pain. I was always interested in understanding human behaviour and chose to study psychology because I thought it looked interesting. After I started studying it, I never thought about doing anything else.

To me, I think it is the fact that we get to find new knowledge. We get to sit down and create experiments to answer questions that no one has asked before! It was when I realised that we could really be the person in the books that creates the science (rather than just reading about it) that I became really passionate about following this career path

As others said, I think psychology is wonderful because it allows you to do both: satisfy your curiosity by finding answers to research questions and at the same time figure out/create things that might improve lives of other people.
