I am originally from Spain; came to London in 2000 with a European scholarship to study a MSc in public mental health and loved the city, the country and the approach to mental health and wellbeing. I live in London and have three young children (7, 5, 4). If I am not seeing patients, doing some research or teaching, I am likely cooking, baking, swimming, in a park or tidying toys. I love travelling, the beach, sailing, and people.

One of the things that I love about my job is the fact that I can combine many roles:
Clinical Psychologist – I treat people who suffer from anxiety, depression, anger issues, low self esteem, stress, eating difficulties. I use talking therapy to help them understand what can they do to feel better about a situation, the world or themselves.
Lecturer – I teach students who want to become clinical psychologist. This is a postgraduate doctorate course that last three years. I teach clinical skills, treatment for anxiety, leadership skills, ethics. I also teach to NHS clinical psychologists who offer supervision to our students, coordinate placements, mark exams, and help organise conferences.
Researcher – I supervise doctorate and masters students who investigate how the way we think or act affect the way we feel and our physical reactions to things. I am mainly interested in anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders and psychosis. I am also involved in a project investigating how virtual reality can help us manage our emotions better. I also review papers for publications and research projects for the University’s ethics committee.

My Typical Day:
I could be seeing patients, doing some teaching, marking exams, supervising research projects, reviewing papers, attending meetings, organising conferences, doing some training, and very very likely answering emails, many, many emails.

Every day is different depending on whether I am doing some clinical work, supervising projects, writing papers, attending conferences…
Here I am in action:
Presenting at a conference in Italy
Post Conference Party

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to develop some graph material, videos or website to help young people better understand the role of their inner senses, what we call interoception, in managing their emotions, their well being, their sense of self and even their social interactions.

My Interview
-
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Empathic, curious, happy
What did you want to be after you left school?
A sea captain
Were you ever in trouble at school?
A few times too many
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Rosalia
What's your favourite food?
Any cheese, thanks.
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
As my 4 yr old son said 'I would ask that father xmas takes covid away'. Then I would take a year long trip around the world with loads of beach and sailing time. And finally a bit more sleep, thanks!
Tell us a joke.
Two psychotherapists pass each other in the hallway. The first says to the second, "Hello!" The second smiles back nervously and half nods his head. When he is comfortably out of earshot, he mumbles, "God, I wonder what *that* was all about?"
