We don’t look for any work experience in our application process so it certainly isn’t essential. Once you start at university we really encourage all students to get as much work and voluntary experience as they can. It depends a little on the area of psychology you are most interested in. For example, work in a school or youth group is great if educational psychology is your passion, whereas if you have a n interest in health psychology work in any clinical or community health programme or for a charity focused on improving health would be great – healthy eating, stop smoking etc. What cuts across all areas of psychology is working with often vulnerable people so any experience with young, elderly, or vulnerable groups help build empathy, people skills, communication etc. It’s important to find something your enjoy and find worthwhile too!

Hannah has given some really great examples. I would also say that it really depends on your own skillset and what it is you feel you want to develop further. For example, I was very shy when I was younger, so finding opportunities to develop my people skills and confidence was really important. I did this by working in retail.
