I just love developmental psychology. I have been a developmental psychologist for over 20 years and I can’t think of a better job for me. Learning how babies and young people learn and think has always intrigued me. At college I was always intrigued by object permamence (Piaget). Everyone finds their own field of psychology that they love.

I’m a developmental psychologist, which involves studying and understanding human development across the lifespan. I think it’s fascinating because there is a huge amount of overlap with other fields of psychology – for example, studying social development, cognitive development, education, neuroscience. I really value variety and opportunities to collaborate with other researchers in different fields.

Psychology is a very young science in comparison to other sciences and it is rapidly advancing, with lots of new methods and techniques being introduced all the time. This makes it a really very exciting field to study and research.

I study developmental psychology and I love thinking about all of the different applications of the work people in my field do and how many problems we can help to solve, for example helping children learn better in school, helping children navigate social situations more easily etc

Well, we’ll all be biased and feel that our areas of study are the most important ones. For me, my area is fundamentally important to the health and wellbeing of humanity. Leading an active lifestyle can afford lots of physical and psychological health benefits, and that is a stand out outcome.

The previous Chief Medical Office once said, if physical activity could be packaged into a pill, it would be hailed as a wonder drug!

Forensic psychology has the potential to improve life for so many people – not just offenders, but their families, victims, police and prison staff, and of course there is a huge benefit to society as a whole if we can better understand crime and improve conviction rates.

I study developmental psychology, and I find it so interesting because it is all about how we develop and change throughout our whole lifespan, in terms of how we grow, how we think, our emotions and our relationships with other people etc. So there’s loads to learn but it is all fascinating to me. I am really interested in how these changes relate to peoples mental health, because this can tell us more about how we can support people who are struggling with their mental health!
