Great question. It depends on what they are unsure about, but I would say to keep an open mind when it comes to what science is. Traditionally, it is seen as chemistry, biology and physics – but science is so much more than this! At the heart of it, science is about investigation, problem solving, and discovery. If that’s something you feel excited about then it might be worth looking into different areas of science that interest you!

My advice would always be to learn more about something, like a topic, before making judgement about whether the area is for them or not. Aim to learn what science is about, what it can do to help us understand more the phenomena we are studying and weigh up whether there is interest in it.

I’d say give it a go. There’s many different options in science, so although physics might not be your deal you might really enjoy biology, for example. There are so many ways to be a scientist, but I think as long as you have curiosity, you’ll find an area that you really like. It’s also 100% OK to go into something and realise you don’t actually enjoy it as much as you thought you would, so I’d say don’t be afraid to try lots of different things.

Find your passion. Really reflect on what you find interesting and what types of skills you enjoy using – there is an aspect of science to suit everyone.

I would say, approach science with an open mind and don’t be scared if you don’t understand everything all at once. It took me a long time to be interested in science and then I switched to studying social science. However, science is not for everyone and if after giving it a try you decide it does ‘not bake your noodle’, then try something else. I have tried loads of things that a) I was hopeless at, or b) lost interest in. There is no shame in saying that this is not for me, but give it a try first before making any decisions.
