Yes! Research involves trying to find out the answers to some really important and complex questions. By finding the answers to these questions, we can often help people or society in some way, so it is a really interesting job to have. My favourite subject is psychology, but in particular I am really interested in how sleep can impact on how we feel and behaviour during the day.
I think science is ultra cool. I like all of the science subjects but my heart lies with psychology as I like the mix of trying to understand people, problem solving, generating novel ideas etc. I have been a psychologist of nearly 25 years and I still get a buzz when analysing data from a study.
When I was at school I thought science was all about making things change colour and explode and mixing things in test tubes – this looked cool to me! I have now learned that there are so many different ways to be a scientist and all of them have cool things involved in different ways. My job involves lots of reading and writing which doesn’t seem that exciting, but I am also able to use brain scanners which is the really fun bit.
As for my favourite subject, I really enjoyed biology at school because it introduced me to neurons and got me started with neuroscience.
I think science is really cool for sure. I love the fact that it can be so different – one person can be growing cells in a lab, another could be interviewing people, a third could be analysing data – they’re all scientists! My favourite area in psychology is mental health, I find it so rewarding to think that what we find could change many people’s lives for the better.
Science is the coolest! That said, I was never into science at school, until I started studying psychology at A-Level. What I love about science is that it moves forward our understanding of the world and helps to solve problems – being a part of investigating this is really exciting and rewarding.
