I went straight from graduating from my degree to completing a masters degree and then a doctorate. I was fortunate to gain part time lectureship experience whilst doing my doctorate and then landed a full time position not long after and finished my doctorate part time. It was networking at a conference that led to my first part time lecturing experience (and that really boosted my CV when I was ready to apply for full time roles). Take every opportunity to meet people you may want to work with in future – go to talks, conferences and events. The British Psychological Society is a great starting point for interesting events.

It took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to do after I graduated from my undergraduate degree. Initially I worked in an administrative role in a care home, which was a really great personal development opportunity for me and exactly what I needed. After some time, I decided to go back and study for my Masters degree and then a PhD. I started applying for jobs around 6 months before my PhD ended and did find something within that time. It was challenging and I’ve had to build resilience, but it has always worked out in the end. I think it will always depend on the type of role you’re looking for after you graduate, because some areas are more competitive than others.
