I’m not completely sure. I know that when people die, the oldest part of the brain called the brain stem stops functioning. The brainstem is what controls things like breathing and keeping your heart beating – so even though someone could be on life support to keep those functions going, they could never survive on their own if the brainstem stops working,
The brain communicates by sending chemical impulses within the brain’s network and to other parts of the body. I presume this communication ceases when we die.
