Right now, I’m studying the impact of a Lego building club on spatial ability and maths performance in Year 3 and 4 children. This involved running Lego clubs in schools for 6 weeks, measuring the childrens Lego construction ability, spatial ability and maths achievement before and after they take part. I’m currently analysing the data and I’m excited to find out what happened! We hoped that the Lego clubs would improve spatial ability and maths for the children who took part, compared to our control group who did crafting activities instead.

Yes. I’m currently looking at internalising symptoms in young people – that’s a broad term for feelings of anxiety and depression. I’m looking at data from thousands of children and teenagers from america to try and see what types of environments are more helpful or harmful. I’m also interested in how risk factors for depression might impact different types of people differently, such as young LGBTQ+ people and young people of colour.

Yes, we are looking at the things that affect stress and trauma in jurors that are exposed to murder cases. We want to know if jurors are adequately supported after jury duty, or if they need some additional wellbeing support.

I’m currently finishing my PhD so writing the last chapter of my thesis summarising the five studies I’ve carried out over the past 3 years! Not as exciting as collecting the data itself 🙂

Yes, I’m writing up a project about measuring children’s creativity using linguistic measures. One of the issues with creativity research is that creativity is such a broad term and the judgement of what is creative can be very subjective, which makes it challenging to study it in a standardised way (there are standardised measures for aspects of creative processes, such as divergent thinking, but not so much for measuring creative value of products, such as stories or paintings). What we are doing with our project is that we are trying to see how much the linguistic quality of a story (e.g., number of words used in the story, how diverse the words and ideas are in the story, whether it follows the rules of the language…) determines its creative value (based on people’s subjective judgement). Essentially we are trying to find out if people would be likely to attribute more creative value to stories that are grammatically correct and linguistically rich 🙂

I am working on some research investigating imposter phenomenon, which occurs when someone feels like they are a fraud and has difficulty internalizing their success. Individuals with this phenomenon often doubt their ability and feel like they are not good enough.
