I’m a geek and animal-lover at heart! But I also love working with students, making sure they feel included, welcomed and part of an inclusive community. I’ve worked for an online university for 5+ years and have focused my research on gender and sexuality.
Finally, I take pride in being a dog momma (and she often sits by my side whilst I work and meet with students online). So here is a photo of Lola to make you smile! 😊

I currently work with students in their first university module – which means helping them understand the basics of psychology and exploring interesting studies about human behaviour. I really like meeting with my students and getting to know why they’ve chosen to study psychology. There is so much to explore and so many exciting job options to choose from!

My Typical Day:
I wake up and feed my dog breakfast at 8am, then log onto my computer at 9am ready to start the day! I usually check my emails to see if any students have questions, attend a online few meetings, teach a class, and work on a few exciting student projects around the university! My day finishes at roughly 5pm when I take my dog on a nice big walk!

As part of my role, I write module content and plan lessons (currently I’m writing a lesson about sexuality and gender!), I also teach students and meet with them 1-2-1 for support, and work with students to set up online social events (such as book and movie club). I work from home full time, which means all my work in done via my computer.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money for an Access and Participation Project, where we meet with primary and secondary school students, help them to celebrate diversity, embrace individuality and promote (psychology) education.
-
Education:
I went to a St James’ CofE Primary School and Redhill Secondary School in the West Midlands and then went onto King Edwards VI College in Stourbridge. After this, I went to the University of Worcester and then moved up to the University of Leeds. Finally, I completed an online course at the University of Essex.
-
Qualifications:
I completed 15 GCSEs ranging from A* to C. This included English Language, English Literature, Maths, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and German.
I then studied Psychology, Sociology, General Studies and German at college and obtained four A-Levels. I also completed an AS-Level in Biology.
After this, I completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology and a Master’s of Art in Social Research. Finally, I was awarded a Certificate in Higher Education Practice last year.
-
Work History:
Whilst I was a university student, I worked in Primark, CEX and Tesco! This gave me a lot of experience working with people and having to communicate well with others. I then did some casual work around my university (working in student halls, the Student Union and within the Help & Support Team) and volunteered with a mental health charity called the Nightline Association.
Once I finished my studies, I began working at the University of Essex Online – firstly as a Student Adviser (helping students manage their learning and answering their questions) and then as a Psychology Programme Manager. This involved supporting our tutors, managing the modules, and designing exciting learning activities and assessments.
