Hi! That’s a great question but I’m a social psychologist, which means that I don’t deliver treatments to people. Social psychologists study how people behave and why they behave that way.
Similar to Jamie, I work in a different area of psychology so I’m more focused on why people behave the way they do rather than providing treatments. Though I have been a Shout Volunteer where I helped support people online, and there were a few times where I was chatting to people for three hours as they were going through difficult times.
Great question and similar to Jamie and Hannah, this isn’t my area of Psychology. that being said, I know a few therapists and sometimes a session can last between 30-180 minutes and some patients can be seen for many years at a time.
In neuropsychology it can depend on what you are trying to do. In an initial consultation it might be around an hour, just to get a general idea of what the individual is having difficulties with. This will inform a more detailed assessment that might take all day.
In the research work I am doing currently, I spend around 90 minutes with people, which is about 70 minutes doing the assessment tasks, and 20 minutes split between explaining what we will be doing and answering questions they may have.
