I found the social side a little bit hard at first! I grew up on the Isle of Man, so quite a quiet place and I wasn’t so used to having so many people around everywhere 😂
I’m also a bit more introverted so I was worried about that at first, but the great thing about uni is that there are lots of different people with different interests and backgrounds so you will find your people!
Having the motivation to keep going! Uni will get tough sometimes – it does for everyone – sometimes there’s a difficult essay to write, or you’ve run out of time for a piece of coursework. The hardest part is to keep going even when it does get hard!
For me, finding the right people to spend time with was tricky, which may have been because I wasn’t too confident in saying what I liked/disliked doing at the time! I also took too long to gain confidence to speak more in seminars and to my tutors – I wish I made more of those opportunities.
A lot of my students say that learning how to write in an academic format is challenging, and others find it hard to be a self-motivated/self-directed learner and read outside of the textbook (e.g. finding and reading academic journal articles).
Dedicating enough time to studying when there are so many distractions. The expectation is that it is entirely self-led and this can be hard to wrap your head round when you have come from 6th or college where teachers are constantly making you do work and checking it is being done. I was not a very good undergraduate student and spent too much time not studying. I realise now that it is only by properly applying yourself that you can get an incredible experience from going to university. If I could go back and do it all again, I would create more opportunities for myself by applying myself more.
