I didn’t find writing a personal statement too bad, but start writing it early so you have lots of time to edit it! Make sure you show off as much of your personality as possible! Applications weren’t too bad for me, although it was very nerve-wracking to see if you had been accepted or not! I ended up in clearing on results day, which was very scary at first, but I think ended up being life-changing for me in a good way. I was very happy to end up where I did!

Writing a personal statement can feel odd because it’s quite different to the writing you usually do in classes/exams, and it always feels hard to tell if you’re doing a good job of showing your strengths! The best advice is to show that you are interesting and interested in the subject(s) you apply for!

If you’re applying for anything with extra tests or interviews, try to get a range of advice and practice as early as you can. I originally applied to Oxford University and wasn’t successful, and I don’t think I prepared enough for those aspects. However, I did then get offers from my other universities and Birmingham was great for me!

I sometimes finding it hard writing about myself, so the personal statement took me a while to get comfortable with. My advice would be to reflect on why you want to study that specific course and make sure you get that across 😊

I asked for a lot of help from my teachers and head of 6th form! Tell stories about yourself that give some evidence for the points you are trying to make – they want to see your are passionate and dedicated student.
