Personally I don’t regret it at all. I tried leaving science 2x between each degree because it felt like I needed a break from the continuous exams and degrees but ultimately there is a reason I keep coming back to academia. I have accepted that I’m a scientist and I like what I do. Now doing my PhD and I love it, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else
I’m happy with what I’m doing at the moment, but I do think I could’ve taken more time between school/degree/PhD – there’s no real need to rush from one to the next!
Sometimes, but only in as much as there are so many cool sounding things to do in the world! I’d have loved to have gone into medicine, or maybe something like tourism. The one thing I love about psychology though, is it gives you so many skills that you can transfer and take to other careers. I know people who have gone into hugely different careers from me, but we all did the same degree!
This is a really interesting question! I had always planned to continue straight into teaching psychology at universities after my PhD, but I finished my PhD during covid lockdowns so there was a lot of uncertainty. I took a job working with other researchers so that I could work from home, but did eventually get back to teaching in a university. While it wasn’t my original plan, I think I learnt a lot along the way so I don’t think I would change it 😊
As for psychology itself – could I ever regret it? I don’t think so! Like others have said here, psychology can open up lots of different job options and opportunities!
