I think so far in my career I felt most successful when I was accepted onto my PhD programme (doctoral degree). Also for my master’s degree I ran a study that looked at how a new health drink (with rosemary in it) could improve cognitive function and blood flow in the brain. I got paid to continue with this research and then it was published in a scientific journal. The company who made the drink then used this work for marketing (on adverts and their website), so that was quite exciting!
I think my most successful moment was when I published my first study in an academic journal. This was before I finished my PhD, and I felt like a proper scientist! It is reviewed by other scientists who decide if it is good enough and make suggestions to improve it, and then it is published. I was able to share my research with other scientists around the world.
The most important recognition for me was when I was being invited for interviews in mainstream media. I have given interviews on a range of mental health issues on the BBC, Telegraph, Yahoo News, MSN News, etc. I have also been on a number of TV programmes outside of UK. That felt like I was being recognised for my contribution.
