Oily fish is a really good source of omega-3s, which are ‘essential’ fatty acids (which have to be obtained from diet as your body can’t make them), there’s a lot of research in my area about the health benefits of consuming them. In particular in improving mood and brain function, across the lifespan.

So based on the evidence so far, I would say it’s advisable to follow the UK dietary guidelines of one portion of oily fish per week, as it is likely to have a beneficial health effect. There are also vegetarian/vegan omega-3 supplements (made from seaweed), for those who don’t eat fish.
