I have run lots of research studies, all with slightly different angles, but generally speaking what I have found is that we can influence what people eat (what foods the choose, how much they eat) by manipulating different factors in their environment – for example, by changing food packaging. Adding nutritional labels to foods, using brand characters like Tony the Tiger on Frosties packaging, putting larger portions on the front of cereal boxes – all of these things have been found to actually influence how people eat. Nutritional labels can help people make healthier choices, brand characters can make children think the food tastes better, larger portions on food packaging can influence people to eat larger portions because they think it is normal.
