      It’s hard to say what food has the biggest effect on the brain, because everything that we eat can have an effect on our health and potentially brain function. But if you look at what might have the most beneficial effect, quite a lot of research has looked at the ‘Mediterranean diet’ which is typically high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and olive oil, has moderate intakes of white meat and fish and low quantities of red meat and processed foods. Research has shown that consuming this diet is associated with lower risk of developing certain diseases and may improve mood and cognitive performance. There’s also a lot of work that looks at individual foods (like fruit or veg) or even components of foods (like omega 3 from fish, or certain vitamins) and how they can be beneficial to brain function.
