This is a tough one!!! I really love talking about the work!! It’s great to be able to talk about your passion to someone else! But, I also love the people I work with which I wouldn’t get anywhere else! The lab and the collaborators are fantastic!

Proving and disproving knowledge. Science taught me not to readily embrace all knowledge but to be critical of them. Gathering evidence is the sweetest thing in science – it’s as sweet as my favourite banana split!

We get to make a difference! Our work is aimed at finding out new things, and those ideas can go on to create something benefits people in the real world. We might find out how a specific part of the brain works, which can help someone who has damaged that part, or we might find out how we automatically respond to a certain type of information, which can help us to design new things that we can respond to better.

Getting to conduct research studies about topics that you’re really interested in! It’s great to be able to identify an area in the subject that needs further work and design a study to do that. Once you’ve finished the study, you write it up so that other scientists can read and learn from it – and then continue their own research too.

      Hi EvelineR,

I am actually going to say I disagree with Dennis on the concept of proof! There’s a bit of a saying about black swans – you can’t prove every swan is white, but you can disprove the theory by seeing a black swan. Essentially you can only support or refute claims in science, which is especially true in psychology!
This links into my favourite part – being able to say ‘I don’t know, but someday science will be able answer that’. The ability and breadth of science is just enormous and being part of these discoveries a long the way as a pleasure and privilege as a scientist!

I love feeling like I am making a difference. When I presented my most recent paper (looking at the best ways to use social media to help support breastfeeding families), I had a couple of people email me to say that they found it useful and will be taking it forward in what they do. Honestly, that is such a wonderful feeling! 🙂

I enjoy that not every day is the same. I never feel bored at doing the same task for too long, something always changes.
