It depends on the research that the big universities focus on. There is some really cool research going on in Canada, Norway, Germany and Switzerland that I might be interested in pursuing later on in my career. However, as much as I like being in academic research, it’s very difficult to find jobs so you sometimes have to just go to where the jobs are, even if you didn’t think of living there before. To be honest, I would also like to find jobs in Scotland (where I live) as I’m close to my family so not sure how great moving far away could be.

I would love to work in Australia! I have a friend who works in The University of Sydney, so I would try and get a job with her! I think in reality it would be tricky with my kids, but maybe one day I could have a sabbatical and travel there for a few months? πŸ™‚

There is some really interesting research coming from all over the world, so there are loads of places! Japan, Australia, Germany all produce some top notch stuff! I wouldn’t mind going to a country like Sweden because I like cold weather! πŸ˜€

Singapore. I used to live there before I moved to Britain. I miss living in Singapore; it’s clean and safe, plus I love the food in their hawker centres (that’s where locals eat). So it won’t take me much persuading to move there for work!

I’d love to move to somewhere like New Zealand perhaps! No particular reason why, just would love to be somewhere else! Wales (where I am now) is a pretty good second though!

There’s a research centre in Australia that does very similar work to what I do now, so probably there. But I love Lisbon in Portugal and I could imagine living there one day.

I’ve previously spent time doing research in Norway for my PhD and really liked it, but to try something different I think I’d like to spend some time in Texas doing research, as I have close family there. I’d also perhaps like to do research in South America, perhaps in Argentina or Chile, as I am bilingual in Spanish and English, and have family in South America. Australia has also always seemed really appealing, as their research is well funded and my husband has family there too.

Ah so many choices! This is why I wanted to do research because you can really almost do it anywhere in the world! I think I would want to work in a place with a lot of sun and a place where there are plenty of places to walk around and explore.

I was really lucky and had a placement year in my first degree where I spent 11 months in Rio de Janeiro as a researcher and I worked in a lab focusing on the effect of emotion on our visual perception. It was really fun and actually I learnt a lot, both about the topic area but also about a complete different culture which was amazing.

      Hi Phoebe,
I always wanted to work at Harvard in USA but I don’t like their politics so will stick with UK.
I also have Australian nationality and citizenship, so if I ever get fed up of London I have the choice to move out there, though I find the country too slow paced for me!
