Most of my work is with children and young people who have special educational needs, so taking their views, needs and hopes into account is a very important part of my job.
When I work with schools, we take a person-centred approach. This means that the most important voice in the room is the voice of the child. We want to know what it’s like for them to be in school, what works well for them, and what isn’t working, and what support they need. At the start of every meeting I ask the child or young person about their hopes and how they would like things to be different. This means that the work we do together is all about helping the young person, not just about doing what the adults want.
