Well luckily for now not too much! For the first year of my research I was planning to do more online studies where people can complete my experiment just using the internet and then later I am planning to do more in-person research (hopefully using MRI to do some brain scanning!).
But what has been different is that usually I would be working at the campus in an office with lots of other people and right now I am working at home in my bedroom with just myself so it’s not as fun as it could be. Also, most conferences that I would have gone to would have been in various different cities (or countries!) but right now they are all online (which is kind of good because I get to save some money and will probably visit those countries on holiday instead!).
I have been quite lucky with my research. I started looking at my area for my master’s. Then the first lockdown happened and it was a mad rush to get everything online! Now that this has been the norm for a while, I’ve not really had any issues and would argue that recruiting participants has been easier for me online than it would have been in person!
Well in my area of research, inviting participants to the lab for testing is the main method of collecting data. As a result, the majority of the experimental tests that you can use as a researcher are only available for in-person testing. Therefore, when I begun my PhD in September 2019, I had planned for in-person studies which I was planning to start around March – April 2020. I did not manage to collect any data as the university closed the labs in March 2020. For that reason, this was a nice opportunity to think “outside the box” and try to come up with innovative paradigms and methods in order to answer my research questions and I have to say, it has been really fun to do that. My supervisor is also very open in creating methods that you can use remotely, without having the participants in the lab. I am now collecting some data from those online tests and it has been very easy finding participants in this way. In addition, because of the ban of in-person conferences, I have had the opportunity to attend a lot of conferences and seminars from the comfort of my couch, without having to pay travel expenses and to spend time travelling to other venues. I really hope that the opportunity to attend conferences and seminars remotely to stay in the post-COVID era as students and academics with a lot of commitments and on a low income can afford to attend.
