Hey! This is a great question! I have loads of hobbies and for your wellbeing its really important to have a work-life balance! My hobbies include martial arts (I love karate kata, these are my favourite!), reading (I’m a real book-worm, I’ve read almost 25 books since the new year started!), going out for walks (obeying guidelines by region) as well as working out at home! But, I also love gaming and a good tv series!

I love to read super-hero comics (both DC and Marvel), and play videogames. Those fantastic stories help me to relax during my days off, so I can go back to work feeling refreshed. 🙂

      Hi WilliamC,
I hand-paint skateboards for people when I have time! I think having hobbies is essential to stop burnout – you can only go on so much working 10 hour days every day of the week.
Though being able to have a work life balance is easier said than done! It can be really hard as a PhD student to just ‘sign off’ from studying. You don’t work a typical 9-5 so it can become easy to slip into habits of checking emails at 8pm, or getting up early and instead of relaxing start coding an experiment. Would love to hear the scientists’ hobbies!

Definitely! When 6pm comes I stop work and do anything but science! Same with the weekend, no science there! I play a lot of videogames, I like to cook and I have 4 cats to chase around the house which always keeps me busy

I really enjoy cooking and do a lot of it. Other than that I love meeting friends and going out for meals (when we’re allowed!). I like watching TV and listening to podcasts too. Normally I don’t have a huge amount of time to do these (when I was in the research centre I would work really long hours plus weekends), so I’m trying to make my work-life balance a bit better!

Yes I do as it really helps in making your life more pleasant and interesting. I like baking, watching movies and TV series, reading books and comics, listening to music, and going for walks and hikes. I do most of them after work, and I leave the baking for Friday evening and the weekends!

Hi WilliamC! Before Covid, I attend a drawing class at least twice a month. I paint portraits (although I’m rather rubbish). I’ve been painting for over six years now, but I still haven’t painted anything remotely worth framing! I also love sailing, but that has also stopped because of Covid (because I sail with a group of friends). Thankfully, there’s still a hobby left that I can enjoy at the moment: gardening.

I also enjoy descaling our kettle and shower head! 😁

Hi William. I love making things! I make a lot of clothes for myself and my children. I also like making scrapbooks of memories to look back on. I also love playing computer games (I play a lot of Minecraft and Mario with my kids).

My hobbies are very simple, I run a lot and play videogames. Both are massive stress relievers from work and lockdown. I sometimes wish I had more sophisticated hobbies but in reality it’s just good to spend time to relax instead of feeling guilty for not using your free time to your maximum potential.
