About the Protactinium Zone

Protactinium is a silvery-gray metal, with a bright metallic shine.

It’s toxic and highly radioactive, and one of the rarest and most expensive naturally occurring elements. For many years, the only supply of protactinium was kept in Great Britain.

The British government spent about £400,000 in 1961 to extract just 125 grams of the element, which is the largest amount of protactinium ever obtained!

This zone is a general science zone, with scientists working in five different areas. You will meet a pharmacist working for Sykes Chemist Ltd, a physicist studying how the sun works and a scientist helping to find a cure for blood cancer.

You will also meet a communications and engagement manager for a company trying to cure childhood diseases, and a scientist studying ways to find out what disease someone has by looking at their urine.
