Hi!
A big part of me thinks that volcanoes are really really cool. When I was growing up, I used to like looking at pictures of volcanic eruptions and watching them on the telly. I remember seeing a video on Newsround of a volcanic eruption in Hawaii – the lava was flowing through a town and destroying peoples homes. I thought it was sad that there was nothing that could be done to stop the lava.
As I got older I got more interested in how the volcanoes worked and thought it would be really good to try and understand how they work to stop volcanic eruptions affecting people so much.
That’s why I research them now. Sadly, when a volcano erupts it is not just a wonderful thing to look at. They can also destroy towns and cities and kill the people living there. So, I want to be able to understand what happens when they erupt better, so that we know what to do when one looks like it will erupt. Where should be people go? Where might be safe? When should people leave? These are all questions that we don’t really know yet.
