This would probably be some tiny (fried) shellfish from a small volcanic crater lake in the Philippines. I had to – they were a local delicacy and my hosts would have been offended – but I had to eat them whole, and shellfish are well known to pick up heavy metals from their environment. Afterwards, I was told that they were unique to that lake.. oops!

Another time, I was in Palermo, Italy, and my very kind friend insisted I should try the local delicacy ‘Pane con Milza’. Some sort of offal.. yeeuck.. Again, I felt obliged to finish it, and didn’t find out till later that he had had something different!

I’ve had some strange foods. I’ve had alligator and baby octopus (in New Orleans but not at the same time!), and kangaroo (in Australia). Baby octopus was the worst – the heads pop in your mouth. I felt like bawling afterward 🙁

Man made octopus legs! They were a delicacy in a restaurant I went to when backpacking in China. they were made of the kind of jelly you get round tinned ham. Now I eat most things but I couldn’t eat more than one.

Codfish sperm. That was actually part of my welcome dinner when I moved to Japan!
