Anitbiotics are a type of medicine that kills bacteria (but not viruses). Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic – penicillin. He noticed the blue mould growing on his bread so he decided to take some and see if he could grow some in a petri dish. He did, but also noticed something else. the petri dishes were exposed to the air so all the germs (bacteria) in the air could land and grow on the petri dish too, but near the penicillin mould there was no bacterial growth.
