Hi one23! I can’t with my family, probably because they would guess me out if I tried 😉 However, I am very good at reading people, but I could probably not catch a liar since they typically are trying to avoid being detected (they have a lot of motivation not to get caught)!

I did find it useful last year, when one of the students (let’s call him JM) I was supervising was not getting along with other students that he was supposed to be working with. I called a group meeting, and I secretly agreed with the other students, but I knew that JM was someone who always felt like he was right. I knew I would have an argument if I agreed with his mates, so I asked JM for his opinion on the matter. He told me, very eloquently, why he was right. I then began to tell the other students how great JM’s idea was and that the reason it was so great was because of X. I was sneaky. I changed JM’s real idea to X, which was similar to the other students’ idea, but with my own twist. Now, what could JM do? He could say he did not agree with it, but why would he when I had just said it was a brilliant idea that I had attributed to him? Yes, it was manipulative. But it solved the group’s problems and they came out with an excellent report in the end.
