From personal experience, I can say that it burns them out.. Basically, if a house gets struck by lightning, then there’s a good chance that the current carried by the lightning strike will run down the aerial cable. This electricity surge will probably knock out the television, and any other devices that are connected which aren’t protected by a surge protector.

It makes it messy and static-y! Not very scientific of an answer!! A big spark of electricity would affect anything that relies on radio waves, such as our TV’s and radios, but I don’t know exactly how. Lightning did knock out the hard drive in my computer and I lost my Masters thesis data a couple of weeks before I had to submit the hard copy of my thesis!!

Lightning can create a large amount of tension, which can reach your TV through the aerial or the power cable. This can damage a TV set (or, for that matter, any other electronic appliance)
