      Hi Oweni004 !

This is a good one – I can’t put an actual number on it but I reckon I’m not the cheapest PhD student since I do have to use lab consumables (plastic petri dishes, pipette tips, glass vials), and also order in proteins, which normally don’t come cheap (~£200-300 per gramme at times!) . Then there’s the cost of equipment which I use, along with me being paid.

However I don’t use a fume hood (which eats up lots of electricity), and most of my reactions are water based, so I don’t use organic solvents either, and my glassware needs are relatively basic – beakers etc, so in the long run I probably don’t cost loads.

A super cheap PhD would involve something like salt. Lots of salt. But I think most of the research has already been done on that 😉
