The leaves are really important to trees because they are how the tree breathes and how it makes food. Leaves have tiny little holes in them where air can come in and out. The tree breathes in carbon dioxide and breathes out oxygen. The leaves are green because they contain chemical called chlorophyl. Chlorophyl turn uses the light form the sun to turn sugar and water into energy for the tree. In the winter when the leaves fall off the tree, the tree is in hibernation like a bear, until the spring when it grows more leaves.
