I’m actually currently planning a meeting next year, designed to help early-year PhD students understand how their work fits in to the bigger picture of all astronomy. For example, I use X-rays in my research, but find it very useful to backup my work by studying at other wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. I sometimes use the longer wavelengths, such as infrared – this is the same wavelength that is used by your TV remote to change channels!
