Have you ever heard of the Big Rip Theory? This theory suggests that there will be an apocalyptic occurrence in 20 billion years called the “Big Rip”. According to this theory, the planet and the entire universe will be literally ripped apart. As the universe is expanding – driven by dark energy – galaxies are moving further and further away from us. The rate of the universe expansion is constantly getting faster, like a car that gets 10mph faster for every mile it drives. At some point, the acceleration is supposed to get so fast that all objects are ripped apart!

It’s a really interesting theory and definitely worth checking out 🙂

Lowri, thats a great answer and I had never heard of the ‘Big Rip’. But if this does occur in 20 billion or so years it will be beyond the fate of our solar system. The Sun at the centre of the solar system is estimated to dye in about 5 billion years. As the sun dies it swells into a red giant and its size will swallow the earth. Lets hope that we have been clever enough to move off the planet or move the planet 🙂 But what would life be like without the sun?

I’m not am astrophysicist but this question fascinates me . Scientists speculate that that the universe could end in at least four possible ways – the big crunch, the big rip, the big freeze and the modified big freeze. The real answer is, we don’t really know but scientists are working really hard to find out.

I heard quite many astrophysicists and cosmologists talk about this topic. Each of them thinks that there will an end one day in the far far future. However they cannot yet agree on how this will happen!
