My PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) was in polymer chemistry at Durham University. I spent the 4 years trying to make new polymers that could dissolve into oils and testing them as lubricant additives for car engines. Quite different to what I do now but a lot of the skills I have found to be transferrable
I was making little capsules (imagine tiny balloons, only visible with a microscope) with either bacteria, yeast or enzymes inside. The aim was to develop the process to make the capsules, and keep the things inside alive. The capsules were to protect the things inside, such as good bacteria, protecting them through our stomach after we eat them, so they can do their good in our gut.
