I would say that you don’t need to be an expert in the area of your PhD, neither absolutely sure about what are your career plans – most of the knowledge and career preferences will be developed during the process.
Two very useful things to know before starting a PhD are 1) take the most of a literature search – know where to search, use the right keywords to find good paper in your area, have a good understanding of the papers and apply it to your PhD; and 2) have a good knowledge on how to plan and organise your experiments using good time management.
