I’ve always enjoyed how chemistry underpins life in terms of elements, atoms and molecules, and then I’ve also always been interested in relating these to life and how living beings are alive because of millions of chemical processes and reactions all occurring at the same time. I think this then inspired me to move into chemical biology especially because I remember learning about enzymes at school and being fascinated by how they work. The area of chemical biology I do is biocatalysis so using enzymes for natural and non-natural reactions and there’s a lot of scope and freedom to working with more the more biological side (enzymes, proteins, bacteria etc.) and also organic synthesis (chemical reactions).
