I get about £35,000 a year (before tax) which is certainly not to be sniffed at! I think my first job paid £18,000 a year and I’ve slowly worked my way up.
If you want really big money though, what you can do is work a few years in the lab and get some experience, then work in the office side of things as a manager, or businessman or something like marketing or intellectual property.
They’re all quite specialised and pay far more than I earn, but you have to work hard and be away from home a lot.

I get £40k a year before tax. Take home is less due to things like paying my student loan back, tax and pension contributions, etc. As Hugh says, not to be sniffed at. My first job was at £24k per year before tax. With a science degree you don’t need to stay in science, you can go into other things that pay you far more like consultancy (e.g. PwC, KPMG, Deloitte, EY), telecoms (e.g. City Fibre, BT, Analysis Mason) but for those you’re expected to work all the hours required to get the job done – you literally could be working until 2AM because you have deadlines to meet but those salaries can lead you to be earning £60k/£70k/£80k+ depending on your level within the company.

Yes. My first job after my PhD I was earning around £32000, but I’ve been working for about 9 years now so I’ve progressed up from there. I’m happy with my current salary!
