It is a really tricky question… There are a lot of facts that influences on us as persons, not only academical or job related ones, also familiar and growth environment. I’m not sure if you are looking for more personal or academical details…
I always wanted to be a plant doctor, I was a really lonely and foccused child (diagnosed as Asperger’s middle degree as teenager, probably wrongly because it was just to justify the bulling I suffered). Thanksfully my closer family (parents first) always supported me, it doesn’t matter the hard way. My pre-scholar teacher found a degree that fit with plant doctor, and since then I was foccused on that way. It is true that I’m really curious and I loved cristalography and ancient greek, for example , but I continue with the modules more adequate to my wanted degree, I didn’t like technical drawing, for example.
I went to the University to study first the degree, then the master and “finally” the doctorate, now, I’m working in plant pathology, a real plant doctor, studying diseases in trees and looking for plant vaccines. Is it the end of the story, absolutely not.
