Thankfully I’ve been many places, but my favourite is Ushaka Marine world in South Africa. You can’t beat some sun and sharks, even if it is just feeding and taking care of them!
I went diving in the Philippines. This is the best place I have dived so far, because the coral was really healthy and I saw loads of really cool fish (like frogfish, clown triggerfish and mandarinfish). A lot of them I had seen before in books and on TV, so I was really excited to see them for the forst time with my own eyes.
I got to work in San Francisco in California for a year which was amazing. I got to see the golden gate bridge and go camping at Yosemite national park where I saw bears. 🙂
I grew up in Australia so that’s where I started my career. I did a fair bit of field work when I was studying at university – I got to travel to abandoned mines and national parks, and I also got to work in a world-leading laboratory in Sydney! I’ve been to scientific conferences around the world – South America, Europe and Japan – and then I’ve moved to the UK to work 🙂
When I was studying I got to help my supervisor collect grasshoppers in the French Alps between France and Italy and in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. It was really beautiful being high up in the mountains in summer and we got to eat lots of great food as well at the end of the day.
During my PhD I did some of my research in the Wakatobi Marine National Park in Indonesia, a beautiful set of islands dominated by coral and mangroves. I spent a few months there a year studying how fish and mangroves interact – my highlight (which was also quite scary!) was definitely snorkelling through mangroves at night counting fish in torchlight – there were a lot of snakes!
In my current job, I’ve managed to survey around some of the far-flung places in England – looking at the amazing communities of creatures that live in the seabed around Lundy Island and the Isles of Scilly were both highlights!

I have been to the synchrotrons in the UK and France currently for my research, both of which are always great experiences!
