Hello Jason,
It is not easy to know what an animal is going through as they cannot communicate with us in the same way as humans. Luckily, there are signs that can point us into some direction, and tools that can help us confirm our suspicions. For example, if you suspect that an animal has an infection, you could take its temperature and if it’s higher than normal you were probably right. If you see that an animal has pain, you can gently touch parts of its body and when the animal reacts to a certain touch, you can assume it’s injured in that part. Then you can explore the surface to see if it’s an external injury what’s causing the pain, or you can take X rays to see if it’s something internal. These are only a few examples, but difficult cases require more attention and probably more tests.
