Hello fraserpheobe – thank you for your question 🙂 I probably notice being a scientist (or rather a science communicator) the most when I’ve just finished a new article about computer science for our website or schools magazine. There’s always a sense of pride when I think I’ve done a good job and explained something well, and that hopefully our readers will enjoy reading. That’s a very nice feeling. I have a soft spot for one of the first articles I wrote for the CS4FN (Computer Science For Fun) magazine which is on page 4 here https://cs4fndownloads.files.wordpress.com/2018/07/cs4fnissue17.pdf – it’s a bit about socks (red socks in washing machines making everything pink) and mostly about medical devices (how to avoid people making mistakes when using them). You can download all of the back issues of our magazines and booklets from this page https://cs4fndownloads.wordpress.com/

During normal non-pandemic times I might take a bus or train into work and I’ll probably be thinking about the science I’ll be learning / writing about that day, and I will certainly enjoy thinking about that too. I do feel lucky to have a nice and interesting job that helps people learn more about how computers and computer science help us to solve problems.

But generally when I wake up in the morning I’m usually only really thinking about breakfast, and how much I’m going to enjoy eating it 🙂 Sometimes I do think a little bit about the science involved: the wonders of electricity heating water in my kettle or causing my bread to become perfectly toasted, then that hot water pulling out all the delicious bits from my tea bag while leaving the tea leaves behind… but mostly I just think about eating and drinking it 🙂
