In my job I get to help stop people cheating in sport – you may have heard of “anti-doping” testing before. After a high profile sporting event (like the Olympics, or the Grand National) the athletes (human and animal) are required to provide samples of blood and urine for testing to make sure they haven’t been trying to cheat by using performance enhancing drugs (eg. steroids). My job is to help test these samples and “confirm” (to use the legal wording”) if any banned drugs are present. This can (and has) result in people losing their gold medals and their prize money.

I’ve also been involved in some forensic analysis of a drug which was seized by police. They couldn’t figure out what it was so came to us to help. This drug had never been seen before, and I got to help figure out what it was.
