Yes, when an experiment keeps going wrong or I just can’t seem to solve a problem, I can feel like giving up. But I think a big part of science is persevering, by asking more questions, getting help from tutors or colleagues and researching more information. This will help you to find new things you can try. And then when experiments do go well, that’s great motivation to keep going!!

Things can certainly be challenging as a scientist, as cool a career being a scientist is, it does come up with its ups and downs! But from every experiment that went well, or didn’t, you learn from it and always have support from fellow researchers who can help, guide, and discuss things with too.

      Hi Olivia ๐Ÿ™‚
      ~
Well, in one sense I actually did because I stopped working as a scientist in a laboratory and started working as a science communicator. I really enjoyed working in labs and did so for 10 years but realised that I what I really wanted to spend my time doing was communicating science to people, so I moved into the field of science communication. (Many scientists who work in labs ALSO communicate science to people as part of their job but others are science communicators as a full-time career, and that was what I wanted to do).

Working outside the lab was a big adjustment at first but it has let me combine the worlds of science and writing, though I do sometimes miss all the lab equipment like the glass bottles with bright blue lids that I used to keep some of my solutions in (https://www.calpaclab.com/glass-media-bottles-5000ml-gl-45-blue-cap-schott-schott/cg-cls-1172-5l) – I think theyโ€™re rather pretty!

Yes. When an experiment doesn’t work, it is the most horriblest feeling in the world, but when you finally get something to work, there is no feeling like it in the world. So everything balances it self out if you persist long enough

Yep, to be honest I think everyone has moments when they feel like giving up. I think it’s important to do things that you’re really interested in, as your passion will help carry you through when things are tough.

Sometimes when work gets busy or I get stuck on something but it’s important to build up resilience so you can pick yourself up again. Support from other people like your friends, the people you work with and family can be so important for this ๐Ÿ˜Š
